Cyanotype/Gumbichromate Prints
For this work, photographs I have taken and collected information
from books are scanned into the computer. Giving myself an aggregation
of images to utilize and refer to, I then use Adobe Photoshop®
to combine, distort and manipulate the images. When complete,
I color separate and reverse the separations into negatives and
output them onto laser transparencies.
The negatives are printed on 100% rag papers, once for each color.
First blue, using cyanotype, then yellow and red using gumbichromate.
The end result is a full color depiction of the original computer
creation.
The main attraction to this way of working is the handmade quality
of this labor-intensive technique. Other methods of digital output
are done in service centers and have a machine look to them. For
me, this is an effective marriage of combining the modern use
of the computer with traditional skill intensive methods of photography
from the historical beginnings of this medium.
